We are committed to building a better future on the promise of paper.

In 2026, we started our first double materiality assessment, helping us understand which sustainability topics matter most to our business and our stakeholders.

The insights gained from that assessment will help guide our decisions moving forward, including a reassessment of our 2030 goals and refinement of our strategy to ensure we focus on what matters most and deliver the results our stakeholders expect.
Sustainable Forests

Our goal is to ensure healthy and productive forest ecosystems

Goal Targets

Sustainable Sourcing

Source 100% of our fiber from sustainably managed forests while safeguarding forests, biodiversity and watersheds

The Importance of Responsible Sourcing

As one of the world's largest producers of fiber-based, renewable paper, we play an active role in preventing deforestation, promoting use of responsibly managed forests and supporting markets for certified products. The most direct way we do this is through our Global Fiber Procurement Policy, which clearly states our unwillingness to accept wood that:

  • is endangered

  • comes from an unknown region or origin

  • has been illegally harvested or acquired

  • threatens high conservation value forests

  • comes from sources that are known to be involved in the violation of human rights including conflict timber, or where indigenous peoples and local communities have not had the opportunity to give or withhold their free, prior and informed consent

  • comes from deforestation or conversion

Seen by Sylvamo: Monitoring Program Helps Vulnerable Species

Guided by a concept of “knowing to conserve,” Sylvamo’s biodiversity monitoring program, known locally as Bem-te-vi, engages employees to help protect and conserve local biodiversity on company-owned forestland by recording wild animals and descriptors such as tracks and physical behavior. Our greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal of 35% is relative to a 2019 baseline and consistent with the Paris Climate Agreement. This ambitious goal exceeds our SBTi-approved target for reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 28.1%, which is in line with a trajectory well below 2°C, and absolute Scope 3 emissions by 27.5%.

Our scope 3 emissions include Categories 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7.

Reducing Water Use

A New Focus for our Water Goal
In 2025, we evaluated our water intensity goal and realized that we did not fully consider the physical and regulatory risks each site faces. As a result, we shifted to a total water use reduction goal, focusing our limited resources on facilities in higher risk areas. This change also helps balance operational needs with ecosystem and community considerations.

We use water throughout the papermaking process, and we return over 90% to the local watershed. The other 10% evaporates during our use or remains as moisture content in our pulp and paper. During the papermaking process, water can be reused up to 10 times before treating and discharging.
